Lesson Content:
What is Drowning?
Drowning occurs when a person’s airway is blocked by water, preventing breathing. It can happen silently and quickly — even in shallow water.
Actions to take
-
⚠️ Do NOT jump in to help unless trained – you may also become a victim!
-
Shout for help and alert lifeguards or others nearby
-
Reach or throw, don’t go – use a stick, pole, rope, or floatation device
Once person is out of the water:
-
Call for emergency help immediately
-
Do Primary Survey as per usual
-
Monitor vitals constantly and prepare for any deterioration
Important Notes
-
Remove wet clothing and keep the person warm (cover with towel/blanket) to prevent hypothermia.
-
Even if the person seems okay, always seek medical attention – water in the lungs can cause complications later (referred to as secondary drowning, which happens hours to days after the drowning incident)
Prevention Tips
-
Always supervise children near water.
-
Learn swimming and water safety.
-
Wear life jackets when boating or at the beach.
-
Avoid swimming in rough or unknown waters.
-
Don’t swim alone or under the influence of alcohol.
