Alcohol Intoxication

Learning Outcomes:
  • Recognize the signs to differentiate between mild intoxication and severe alcohol poisoning

  • Know the critical signs that require immediate emergency services (e.g., unconsciousness, slow breathing, seizures)

  • Perform correct first aid for an unconscious casualty (recovery position, warmth, monitoring)

Lesson Content:

What is Alcohol Intoxication?

  • Alcohol intoxication happens when someone consumes more alcohol than their body can safely handle. It slows down brain and body functions, affecting coordination, thinking, and breathing.

Causes

  • Drinking large amounts quickly

  • Drinking on an empty stomach

  • Mixing alcohol with medications or drugs

Signs and Symptoms

  • Mild to moderate intoxication: slurred speech, unsteady walking, mood swings, delayed reactions, poor judgment

  • Severe intoxication (alcohol poisoning): vomiting repeatedly, confusion, seizures, slow or irregular breathing, blue or pale skin, very low body temperature, unconsciousness

Actions to take

  • Assess the person

    • Check if they can respond by gently shaking and calling their name

    • Look for danger signs such as slow breathing, seizures, or unconsciousness

  • Call emergency services immediately if the person cannot be woken, has very slow breathing, seizures, or repeated vomiting

  • Keep them safe

    • Place them on their side in the recovery position to prevent choking

    • Loosen any tight clothing

    • Keep them warm but not overheated

  • Stay with them

    • Never leave the person alone

    • Watch for changes in breathing or consciousness

    • Be ready to start CPR if they stop breathing

  • If awake and responsive

    • Keep them seated or lying down

    • Offer small sips of water only if fully alert

    • Stay calm and reassure them

What NOT to Do

  • Do not give coffee or other stimulants

  • Do not put them in a cold shower

  • Do not make them vomit

  • Do not leave them to “sleep it off” without supervision

Prevention Tips

  • Drink slowly and eat food before and during drinking

  • Know your personal limits

  • Never mix alcohol with other substances

  • Arrange safe transport home before drinking
